Virgin of the Forsaken (1644)
Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales, Madrid, Spain
Our Lady of the Forsaken, known as ‘Virgen de los Desamparados’ (Valencian: ‘Mare de Déu dels Desamparats’), is the patroness of Valencia (Spain). The feast of Our Lady of the Forsaken is held on the second Sunday of May. Thousands of Valencians pay tribute to their patroness on this day. The Virgin is represented with a lily in one hand and the baby Jesus carrying the cross in his arms. The image is characterized by a slight forward tilt, and she is known affectionately as ‘La Geperudeta’ (‘The Little Hunchback’).
